Dreamy, full sounding and mostly on the slower side. If I had to pull an explanation out of nowhere immediately I would say “Loop-based kind of beats sometimes beat-less with a lot of bass usually. Also my sound doesn’t really stay the same. I think focusing on that aspect is kind of pointless.ĭescribe your music to people who haven't heard it before. You could say that the fact that the stuff I make comes from raw emotion is related to the idea of something being what we have come to label as that of a “punk” mentality. It’s the instrument I know best and has become a useful tool for me. Maybe this comes from being rooted in hip-hop and funk, I have no idea. I guess you could say a lot of my music is beat-driven. How do all of those elements come out in your music now? What is your favorite instrument to play?Īnd you did grow up liking punk and hip-hop, playing guitar. An automaton does not know why it does what it was built to do, it just does. It helped me understand that you can still believe in, appreciate, and live with things you do not fully understand. The fact that this advance in technology could subconsciously affect the world so powerfully made me realize how powerful the subconscious is. There was a period where I read about the industrial revolution and how bringing machines into the workplace changed man’s relationship with rhythm. I know that it’s what I am meant to do, what I was brought into this world to do. I do not know why I like to make things, I just do. It is built usually to perform a specific duty. "Gather sounds, throw shit on canvas, fine tune." Reiner talks to Myspace about his aesthetic, how his monicker has Space Jam roots and why Los Angeles is paradise. Growing up listening to hardcore/punk and hip-hop, Reiner turned to electronic production after attending Boston's Berklee School of Music. “Automaton is me,” says Reiner, and to that I say- it is very nice to meet you.As Gossamer, Los Angeles native Evan Reiner creates an ambient soundscape laden with melodic guitar hooks and beats. My favorite tracks include “Print” and “Okuma.” For him it is a personal process, yet it can speak for so many. Automaton contains so much musical and emotional content that one listen through isn’t enough for a complete experience more symbolism for the ideas of balance and understanding that Reiner talks about. From beginning to end Automaton inspires a search for that balance, ending with “For Sleep” a track which, to me, symbolizes that balance is a neverending and continuous journey. “It’s a coping mechanism for the struggle to realize and balance what I am and am not in control of in my life,” Reiner says as he describes his work (quoted from the back of the album cover). Automaton showcases looping techniques and low bass to create deep ethereal vibrations that ignites an inner flame, and a quest to understand oneself- ambient music at its finest. This ability is what makes Automaton as breathtaking as it is. Gossamer’s passion for what he does is apparent, you do not only hear his art, but you feel it more than anything. With a great turn towards electronic methods of composition, the artists who truly stand out are the ones who are able to convey their spirit and their love through their sounds. The mastermind of Gossamer, Evan Reiner, just released his first full-length record, Automaton after being a part of the L.A electronica scene for about 20 years now. The magic of continues to progress and if you’ve yet to really tune in, the time is Gossamer. ![]()
